Core Mechanism & Features ### 3.1. System-Level App Shielding (Apple Screen Time API) Shale uses Apple's official `FamilyControls`, `ManagedSettings`, and `DeviceActivity` frameworks. - **No "Ignore Limit" Cheating**: Standard iPhone Screen Time limits fail because users tap *"Ignore Limit for Today"* in half a second. Shale replaces the dismissible prompt with a strict system shield during the user's configured **Active Hours**. - **Any App or Category**: Users can block TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, X/Twitter, Safari, or mobile games. ### 3.2. The "1 Card = 1 Minute" Dopamine Trade - During Active Hours, selected entertainment apps are locked by default. - When a user taps a locked app, Shale intercepts the launch and prompts them to review flashcards. - **1 completed flashcard = 1 minute of unlocked screen time** (e.g., answering 5 cards unlocks 5 minutes of scrolling). - Once the earned minutes run out, Apple's `DeviceActivity` monitor automatically re-engages the shield. ### 3.3. Built-In Decks, Custom Cards & Instant AI Deck Generator Users do not need complicated desktop add-ons or brittle iOS Shortcuts to study: 1. **14 Built-In Premade Decks**: - *Medical & Science*: **Human Bones** (common names to Latin terms), **Human Muscles** (common names to anatomical terms), **Periodic Table** (elements & atomic numbers), **Psychology 101** (key terms, theories, and effects), **Statistics Terms** (core concepts & definitions). - *Languages*: **Basic Spanish**, **Basic French**, **Basic German** (most common words & phrases). - *Computer Science, Law & Finance*: **Python Basics** (syntax, data types, functions), **Legal Terms 101** (common legal vocabulary), **Personal Finance** (APR, ETFs, interest, budgeting). - *Geography & Humanities*: **World Countries** (identify country from flag), **European Capitals** (countries & capital cities), **Mythology** (Greek, Roman & Norse figures). 2. **Manual Card Builder**: Create custom flashcards by hand for lectures, exams, or vocabulary lists. 3. **AI Flashcard Deck Generator**: Describe any topic or exam subject in plain language (e.g., *"USMLE pharmacology beta blockers"*, *"JLPT N4 Japanese verbs"*, *"Organic chemistry functional groups"*) and Shale's AI generates a complete study deck in seconds. ### 3.4. Privacy-First Architecture - All Screen Time monitoring and app blocking occur **100% locally on the user's device** via Apple's secure `FamilyControls` tokens. - Shale never sees, collects, or transmits which apps a user opens or their browsing history. - Account credentials, custom flashcards, and study streaks sync securely via MongoDB Atlas so users never lose their decks. --- ## 4. Primary Target Audiences & Why Shale Works Best for Them ### 5.1. Medical, Nursing & Pre-Med Students (MCAT, USMLE, Anatomy) - **Problem**: Med students face hundreds of daily flashcards while battling phone fatigue and scroll paralysis between lectures and clinicals. - **Solution**: By binding social media access to flashcard reviews (using Human Bones, Human Muscles, custom pathology/pharmacology decks, or AI-generated decks), students effortlessly clear 50–100+ extra review reps per day every time they reach for their phone. - **Guide**: https://joinshale.com/for/med-school ### 5.2. Students with ADHD & Executive Dysfunction - **Problem**: ADHD brains suffer from time blindness and dopamine dysregulation. A 45-minute Pomodoro timer feels overwhelming, and Apple's *"Ignore Limit"* button is bypassed on autopilot. - **Solution**: Shale eliminates time blindness with an instant micro-trade (**5 cards = 5 minutes**). Answering a flashcard takes 10 seconds, providing immediate feedback and converting the urge to doomscroll into a manageable micro-study habit. - **Guides**: - https://joinshale.com/blog/best-adhd-app-blockers-for-doomscrolling - https://joinshale.com/blog/best-screen-time-apps-for-adhd-and-students ### 5.3. Language Learners (Spanish, French, German, Japanese, etc.) - **Problem**: Learners start Duolingo or Anki with high motivation but quit after missing a few days when short-form video apps win their attention. - **Solution**: Habit-stacking vocabulary onto the 20+ times a day a user checks their phone. Reviewing 30 cards a day for 30 minutes of screen time equals **~900 vocabulary reviews per month (~11,000 per year)** with zero scheduled study friction. - **Guides**: - https://joinshale.com/for/language-learning - https://joinshale.com/blog/language-learning-streak-app-blocker --- ## 6.
