Practice a Language Every Time You Reach for Your Phone
It is easy to open TikTok or Instagram and hard to open a study app. Shale connects the two: the apps you choose stay blocked until you answer flashcards, and every card you complete earns 1 minute of screen time.
Start with a premade language deck
Free to download on iOS, with a 14-day free trial.
Short, frequent practice
Research on the spacing effect suggests that many short practice sessions tend to work better than one long cram session. You already pick up your phone many times a day, so Shale uses those moments for a few cards each time.
Spanish
A premade Basic Spanish deck to get you started.
French & German
Premade Basic French and Basic German decks are included too.
Any other language
Write your own cards, or describe what you want to learn and let the AI generate a deck. AI-generated cards can contain mistakes, so double-check them.
What the math looks like
Because 1 card = 1 minute, the number of cards you review depends on how much screen time you want. An example for illustration:
Illustrative only. Your results depend on how consistently you use the app.
How to get started
- Download Shale from the App Store.
- Pick a deck: choose a premade language deck, build your own, or generate one with AI.
- Choose the apps to block: any app on your phone.
